The Three SEO Promises You Should Run From (And What We Promise Instead)

Guaranteed rankings, backlink quotas, and five-star reviews on demand. Two of the three cannot be safely delivered, and the third can now carry a federal fine. Here is what to ask instead.

If you have ever talked to an SEO agency, you have probably heard at least one of these: “We will get you to number one on Google.” “You will get 50 backlinks a month.” “We will fill your profile with five-star reviews.” They sound great. Here is the problem: two of the three are things nobody can legally or safely deliver, and the third is a coin flip they are quietly betting with your money.

We built UpRyzze to do the opposite. So it is only fair we explain exactly what we will not promise you, and why that is a good thing.

Promise 1: “Guaranteed number-one rankings”

No one can guarantee where you rank on Google. Not us, not the biggest agency in the country. Google says so itself: rankings are decided by an algorithm nobody outside Google fully controls, weighed against every competitor also trying to rank. Anyone who guarantees a position is either telling you something they cannot back up, or using risky tactics that can get your site penalized later.

What we do instead: optimize everything that actually moves rankings and that we DO control. Your on-page structure, your Core Web Vitals and speed, your content depth, your local signals, and increasingly your visibility inside AI answers. Then we show you the real numbers, not a promise.

A specific number of links every month almost always means one thing: they are buying or trading them. Google’s own spam policies treat paid links that pass ranking signals as a link scheme. When an agency sells you a link quota, the risk lands on YOUR site, not theirs, and the penalty can erase months of work.

What we do instead: we do not sell link-building retainers, and we will never buy links on your behalf. We help you earn links the durable way, by creating things worth linking to. Fewer empty promises, none of the risk.

Promise 3: “We will get you five-star reviews”

This one is not just risky, as of October 2024 it can be illegal. The Federal Trade Commission’s Rule on fake reviews bans buying reviews (positive or negative), incentivizing reviews for a specific rating, insider reviews posing as customers, and AI-generated fake reviews. Penalties run up to $51,744 per violation. An agency that “gets you reviews” may be handing you a legal liability with your name on it, not theirs.

What we do instead: we sync and surface the real reviews your real customers leave, and we make it easy to ask for them the honest way. Your reputation, earned and clean.

Why we are comfortable saying all this

Most agencies sell effort: a retainer, a team, a monthly report of activity. We sell outcomes we can actually produce and measure, automatically, without a room full of people doing it by hand. That is why we can afford to be honest about the things that cannot be promised. We are not protecting a billable-hours model, we are protecting your results and your risk.

Three questions to ask any SEO provider

  1. “Will you put that ranking guarantee in writing, and what happens if you miss?” (Watch them backpedal.)
  2. “Where do the backlinks come from, and are they paid?” (If yes, it is your risk.)
  3. “How do you generate reviews?” (If the answer is not “from your real customers,” walk away.)
